A Note From Victoria

Hello from hot and sunny Bakersfield!

As many of you know, I did not return to the classroom this year, as I wanted to have more time to spend with my family, along with more time to devote to KinderKorner ... presenting workshops, attending conferences, writing curriculum, creating new resource products for teachers, and devoting more time to the KinderKorner Website and Listserv.

It's been a great decision for me, and I am excited about all of the new things I'm doing, as well as all the wonderful teachers I am meeting on my travels throughout the United States and Canada.  My current workshop and conference schedule is posted on the KinderKorner Website Homepage, so be sure to check there often to see if I'm going to be in your area during 2002 & 2003.  I am also available for school site and school district inservice trainings ... if you'd like more information, send me an email.

Because I don't have my own classroom this year, I will be using my photo pages to share many things, including the following:

* Photos from the classrooms I'm visiting
* Photos sent to me from teachers around the world
* Photos of KinderKorner products that are of current or seasonal interest
* Photos from workshops and conferences
* Thematic teaching ideas
* Links to themes and activities
* Whatever else seems worth sharing

I hope to add a new page at least twice a month, and more often when time allows.  Each page will look just like this page from this point upwards, with all new material added below.  To find out what's new on each page, you can click on the [ new this week ] link at the top of the page, which will take you directly to the listing of what's on this week's page.

I hope you enjoy this year's School Days photo section, and I wish you all an enjoyable and successful year.

Happy Teaching!

Photos from Pauly School Kindergarten Classes

I volunteered at my "old" school on the first day of school, and again later in the week.  It was lots of fun to be able to meet the incoming KinderKids and to visit with many of the parents I've become friends with in the past few years.

I spent time in all five K classrooms, reading to the children, doing Beginning of Year assessments, and generally lending a hand with whatever needed doing.  Each teacher has her room set up to accomodate her personal teaching style, and to allow for smooth transitions between activities.  Here are some photos of how the various classrooms look for the beginning of school.

Mrs. Swaim's Room & Mrs. DeShane's Room
Mrs. Swaim and Mrs. DeShane have the two "original" kindergarten classrooms, in a building by themselves.  Their rooms have all traditional things found in a K classroom ... built-in painting easels, student bathrooms, a large communal sink, and lots of space.  Here are some of the things they're doing in the classrooms this year:

Both teachers have a Special Student Of The Day bulletin board, which not only follows the suggested routine in Pat Cunningham's terrific Month-By-Month Reading And Writing For Kindergarten book, but also goes along with Unit 1 Look At Us! in the newly adopted Houghton Mifflin reading series.

Each day a new Student Of The Day is highlighted.  All of the students draw a picture of the Student Of The Day ... those photos are stapled into a book and given to the Student Of The Day to tak home.  The Student Of The Day has their photo taken, and that photo is added to the bulletin board along with their self portrait.

I'm proud to announce that the KinderKorner Website was selected by Houghton Mifflin as one of only two websites provided as Internet Links for additional teacher support of the kindergarten Look At Us! unit, and is featured on the Houghton Mifflin Education Place website in the Internet Links section.

This is Mrs. Swaim's Name Train bulletin board, located above the buiilt-in painting easels.  As soon as each student can write their own name, they will get to write their name on a train car and add it to The Name Train.

This is one part of Mrs. DeShane's teaching wall in the whole group instruction area.  This is where her class does opening activities, including days of the week, months of the year, and Math Their Way calendar activities.

The small pocket chart contains coins attached to Velcro, which are placed on Velcro lines on the chart, in combinations that equal the current date.  For example, today's date is September 7 ... to show that on the coin chart, there would be two rows of coins:  one row with seven pennies, and another row with a nickel and two pennies.

These are large flashcards in the pocket chart in Mrs. DeShane's room.  This picture was taken on the fourth day of school, and Mrs. DeShane was introducing the letter D.

Although many textbooks suggest teaching a letter a day or a letter a week, it's important to spend time on ALL of the letters each day, and to have many different alphabets on display at child-friendly heights throughout the classroom.

Current research says there should be a minimum of five alphabets on display in your room, though it's very easy to double or triple that amount by creating Literacy Centers that contain laminated alphabet posters and charts.

One of my personal favorite Literacy Centers is called The Placemat Center, and it contains many types of children's placemats, including more than a dozen different placemats with alphabets, alphabet activities, and alphabet games on both sides.

Placemats are very inexpensive (usually less than $1.00) and they're coated with heavy plastic, which means you don't have to laminate them.  They make great work mats for messy activities like PlayDo® and fingerpainting, and the kids love to use them for reading the alphabet as well as for reference when writing the alphabet.

 Mrs. Landucci's Room & Mrs. Blackburn's Room
Mrs. Landucci and Mrs. Blackburn have nearly-new portable/trailer classrooms.  These rooms are smaller than the older K rooms, but much lighter/brighter inside.  They have terrific walls that are made of bulletin board type material, so that it's possible to staple, tape, or tack things literally anywhere and everywhere in the room.  There are no student bathrooms in the portable classrooms, and storage space and counter space is minimal, requiring a lot of creative solutions on where everything should go.

This is the teaching wall in Mrs. Landucci's room, adjacent to her story floor.  It's easy to see the many types of activities that take place here.  The yellow smiley face pocket chart holds each student's name (written on sentence strips) ... as students arrive they find their name on a table, use it as a model for signing in on a daily page in the class Sign In Book, and then they put their name in the pocket chart.  The laminated strips with alphabet letters will become Mrs. Landucci's Word Wall.

This is Mrs. Landucci's classroom library.  Books are kept in many types of storage containers ... step-up shelves, plastic basket and tubs, and large cardboard boxes that will hold Big Books throughout the year.  Two alphabets are on display here, for student reference as well as for Read The Room/Read The Walls activities.  Both alphabets are illustrated with color photographic pictures, which are very appealing to the children.

First week of school graph, of student ages.  Graphs like this help the students to recognize and read each others' names.

Another first week of school graph.  Both of these graphs will be added to each time a new student enrolls in the class.  Students will count the names on each graph to be certain that everyone is represented.

TLC projects have been an integral part of the kindergarten curriculum at Pauly School for the past four years, which is when I began teaching there.  TLC projects teach colors, shapes, positional words, math concepts, and listening to directions.  Because they are multi-sensory projects, they're terrific for language acquisition by all students, and are well suited to second language learners.  For more information on TLC directed art projects, please visit the TLC Website at www.tlcart.com.

The reading table in Mrs. Blackburn's room.  This was my classroom for the previous three years, and few things feel as strange as seeing how someone else sets up "your" room.

The wall with the big clock on it is the wall I used for my "big" thematic displays:  Pumpkin Patch, G Is For Gingerbread, Under The Sea, and other units throughout the year.

Mrs. Blackburn is much tidier and more organized than I could ever hope to be, and she has lots of wide open spaces that will fill in as the year goes on.  Because the portable classrooms don't have much storage, tables are used as counter space and boxes are stored below.

As mentioned above, the walls are bulletin boards from floor to ceiling ... I left my paper and borders up when I moved out of the room in June, and it made sense to keep them rather than spend several hours repapering the entire classroom.

This is the lefthand side of the other large teaching wall, where I used to display our monthly quilts.  Mrs. Blackburn has a large cardboard box on the floor, holding Song & Poetry cards used as a Literacy Center.

One more large wall in Mrs. B's room.  The Pauly K teachers use the "Apple Annie" alphabet books, and this is the large alphabet set that goes with the books.  I have the same alphabet, laminated and cut into two letter sections, then bound into a Big Book.

Dollar Store Goodies

I found some really terrific "bathtub puppets" at the Dollar Tree store ... they're made out of a soft, terry-cloth type knit material, which means they're washable.  I can put them in specific Literacy Centers, or just let the KinderKids choose one during self-selected reading.

Here are a few of my favorites:

The Three Little Pigs

I'm planning to splash some brown washable tempera paint on them when we read Piggy In The Puddle
during our We Love Mud Unit this year.

The Piggy In The Puddle

See the piggy,
See the puddle,
See the muddy little puddle.
See the piggy in the middle
Of the muddy little puddle.

An outstanding book for rhyme and word play!

~~~~~
We can also use two of the three piggies to act out the Toot & Puddle Stories,
which last year's class really enjoyed.
Toot & Puddle
Toot and Puddle are terrific best friends your students will love
Toot & Puddle:
Puddle's ABC
A superb addition to your alphabet book collection!
Toot & Puddle:
A Present for Toot
A great story that goes well with my B Is For Birthday thematic unit
And of course it will be LOTS of fun to use just ONE of these sweet little piggies
as the star of Olivia and I Like Me!
I Like Me!
Celebrate everyone's individuality with this energetic book
Olivia
Caldecott Honor Book, 2001
ABC I Like Me
Another must-have
alphabet book
Baby Ducky and Little Bear
The bear is definitely one of my favorites.
I plan to use him with Happy Birthday Moon,
which we read during the first or second week of school.
Happy Birthday Moon
Mouse and Elephant
The mouse will be great with If You Give A Mouse A Cookie and If You Take A Mouse To School!
And he's already a big hit for the KinderKids to use when reciting Hickory Dickory Dock
(they use their arm as the "clock" ~ the same way they use their arm as the water spout in Itsy Bitsy Spider).
If You Take A Mouse To School
New for 2002 and sure to be a hit
If You Give A Mouse A Cookie
An all-time favorite that we use as a take home Traveling Book with a puppet included
If You Take A Mouse To The Movies
A delightful Christmas themed story
Duck and Hen
These two will go nicely with one of my favorite Joy Cowley stories,
available only from The Wright Group.
Good Morning Songs
These are the Good Morning Songs for the month of August.
I will post the September songs on the next School Days Photo Page, after I have a chance to take photos of them.
I took these photos at a school site inservice in Hazlehurst, Mississippi in August.  The big orange blob behind the "hamburgers" line in the first grade song is a pumpkin from another sentence strip that was waiting to be used.
