Crazy For Cows Week

March 17, 2001 ~ A Note From Victoria:

When I uploaded last week's page on March 13th, I promised to come back and finish the sections that weren't yet ready.  This week's page contains those completed sections plus some other changes, and I've also removed large portions of what was on the page a week ago.

Even so, at first glance some parts of this page might appear to be identical to last week's page, since I kept some of the "old" stuff as well. Here are some of the additions and changes I've made, so you'll have a general idea of what's new this week. You'll find new information, photos, and activities in the following areas of this page, and in other spots, too:

New Section ~ Mud, Mud, I Love Mud!

Down On The Farm ~ added Crazy About Cows section

Down On The Farm ~ added Tractor Books and Activities

Mrs. Wishy-Washy ~ added final pages to our class Big Book

March Quilts ~ added My Favorite Quilt Books

Added April 16, 2003:

Down On The Farm Emergent Reader Set

All New Celebrate Spring Workshop Resource Packets

I was only at school 2 1/2 days this week, and spent the second half of the week at home with the flu.  That means I don't have tons of classroom photos for this week.  It also means I can use the time and space to catch up on the photos that I promised to get online earlier this week.

This week we read lots of books about Tractors, and I've added a special section on Tractor Books that includes some fun Making Words Activities.  These books are extremely popular with the boys in my class -- they love the photos and finding out how those big machines work.  My collection of tractor books makes a terrific Literacy Center that includes fiction as well as non-fiction books and a few toy tractors.

This week I finally had time to get our We Like Mud Poems photos online, so you can see some of the neat poems the KinderKids wrote, along with their illustrations.  I'll be laminating the pages and making them into two books for our Big Books Literacy Center.  The I Love Mud section also features a few more excellent books about Pigs -- including my current favorites, Toot & Puddle stories, and Olivia, a 2001 Caldecott Honor Book -- that didn't make it onto last week's page.

We're moving our Farm focus from pigs to cows, and I have some new books to share with you that the KinderKids especially enjoyed.  I'm also sharing some of the other general farm theme stories that we like best, plus some songs and poems from my Down on the Farm Unit.

I always read Sam Johnson and the Blue Ribbon Quilt during my Farm unit, and I've added it to this week's page in the section on Quilting Books.  It's the story of a farmer who discovers the joys of quilting while patching the pigpen fence.  You can read more about it below or by clicking on the title or cover to go directly to Amazon.com

Amazon's Buy 4 Books and Get Free Shipping On 3 Offer
is back for a limited time, but they don't say how long.
Visit the Amazon.com Website for details.

It's the end of the third quarter grading period for us, which means quarterly benchmark testing time.  I'm currently assessing the KinderKids in reading, writing, and math, using tests provided by our district.  I won't be sharing them online, as that would be unfair to the other teachers on our K team, whose parents might not think to look for the testing info on Mrs. Smith's website :o)

I've also added a few of my favorite quilting books to this week's page ... some are wonderful stories and others are non-fiction books filled with terrific illustrations, photos, and how-to information.  I plan to add a literature-based thematic unit on Quilting to the website sometime soon, too.

Mud, Mud, I Like Mud!

We wrote our I Like Mud poems after many readings of Mrs. Wishy-Washy and The Piggy In The Puddle.

The Piggy In The Puddle

See the piggy,
See the puddle,
See the muddy little puddle.
See the piggy in the middle
Of the muddy little puddle.

An outstanding book for rhyme and word play!  Under $6.

Before working with the poetry frame, the KinderKids brainstormed a list of words to describe mud:

squishy
squahsy
slippery
gooey
splishy
sploshy
soft
wet
black
brown
icky
nasty
dirty
mushy
muddy
gross
smooshy
oo-ey
washy
cold
gushy
yucky

I wrote the words directly onto sentence strips, cut each word to its own unique size, and put them in the bottom half of a pocket chart.

After we had our word bank, I put the poetry frame in the top half of the pocket chart, and we practiced chanting it, clapping where the blank spots (marked by popsicle sticks lying down) for the adjectives were.

Next the KinderKids took turns coming up and choosing one word to put into a blank.  They either had to tell us what their word said, or ask for a particular word and we would help them find it ... this built a lot of familiarity with the way the words looked and how to tell them apart.

We would read each line as it was "written," to help the kids remember what it said, and then read the finished poems.  After lots of practice -- probably 30 minutes or so, because they were having a great time -- I sent the kids to their seats to draw "mud" pictures with colored markers.  If you look closely at the pictures above, you'll see that many of the children incorporated some of the word bank words into their pictures.

While the children were drawing, I had each child come over and choose the words for "their" poem.  As they placed each word in the poetry frame, I wrote it on the blank lines on the printed version of the poem.  After school, I mounted each child's picture and poem together on muddy brown paper, to be made into a big book.  Because some pictures were vertical and some horizontal, we ended up with two books.

We've really enjoyed reading all of the poems and talking about the different "feel" and images created by different adjectives.  Many of the children chose the "icky, yucky" words when writing their poems, but later decided they liked the way the alliterative and rhyming words sounded when read aloud.

Toot and Puddle Stories
Toot and Puddle are best friends who enjoy different things.  Toot likes adventure and travel, and Puddle's the little piggy who stayed home.

Toot & Puddle

Toot embarks on a year-long trip around the world, sending wonderful postcards home to Puddle.  Double page spreads compare their activities side by side during each month of the year.  The illustrations are richly detailed by 70's greeting card artist Holly Hobbie (does anyone but me remember her little girl characters with the huge eyes?).

This is a wonderful book to use with Alma Flor Ada's Dear Peter Rabbit

to compare the types of written correspondance sent in each story ... postcards versus letters.  Both stories have a lot of depth and many fascinating things to talk about.

Toot & Puddle Board Game

I like a lot of things about this game.  First, it's as nicely illustrated as the Toot & Puddle books.  Next, it has a fun  mailbox and postcards.  And it teaches lots of concepts while children play the game, which can be played on many levels.  Here's what Amazon.com says about it:

"Young players learn color recognition, computation skills, and geography in this colorful board game based on the children's book Toot & Puddle, by Holly Hobbie. Played by two to four players, the game takes Toot, the traveling friend, on a world vacation around the board. At various stops along the way, Toot sends picture postcards to Puddle, the stay-at-home friend. A colorful stand-up mailbox is provided for that purpose. Players toss dice, move to the appropriately colored squares, and use words or pictures to identify postcards. While Toot and Puddle have very different lifestyles, they are always good friends, which helps reinforce concepts of diversity for children."

Caldecott Honor Book, 2001

Olivia

Olivia is good at singing 40 very loud songs and is very good at wearing people out. And scaring the living daylights out of her little brother, Ian, particularly when he copies her every move. She is also quite skilled at reproducing Jackson Pollock's "Autumn Rhythm #30" on the walls at home. When her mother tucks her in at night and says, "You know, you really wear me out. But I love you anyway," Olivia precociously pronounces, "I love you anyway too."

Fun On The Farm
With Words

An Author Study Featuring
Bernard Most

The Cow That Went OINK

My KinderKids and First Graders have loved this book for many years, and it's terrific for teaching word play and phonemic awareness concepts.  They especially enjoy the way the other farm animals laugh (Quack-Ha! Neigh-Ha!  Cock-a-Doodle-Ha!) and use special voices during Shared Reading.

I have a very well-worn Big Book Version of this story, plus  several hardcover copies so the kids can "read along" to the tape we've made of the entire class reading together and providing the sound effects.  Also available in Spanish, as La Vaca Que Decia Oink.  Highly recommended, as ares the companion books below.

Z-Z-ZOINK!
A little piggy keeps the other farm animals awake with her silly snoring.

Cock-A-Doodle Moo!
Another fun and silly wordplay tale that makes kids giggle!

Row, Row, Row Your Goat
A terrific board book with farm animals rowing down the stream.

Peek-A-Moo!
A where's- the-cow boardbook.
Other Springtime Favorites By

Zoodles!
A fun play-on-words book of animal riddles, with delightful illustrations.  Big Book edition is great for whole group sharing.

My Very Own Octopus
A Parent's Choice Award winner.

ABC T-Rex
An awesome alphabet feast!

How Big Were The Dinosaurs?

Five Cows All Black and White
(Tune:  5 Little Speckled Frogs)

Five cows all black and white
Chewed their cud from day to night
So they could give milk sweet and pure.
Squirt! Squirt!
One left the barn one day
So she could find more hay
Then there were 4 cows all black and white.
Moo! Moo!

Cows That Type

fROM tHE aMAzON.CoM rEViEW:

The literacy rate in Farmer Brown's barn goes up considerably once his cows find an old typewriter and begin typing. To the harassed farmer's dismay, his communicative cows quickly become contentious:

DeAr faRMer bROWN,
tHE bArn IS very cOLD aT NiGHt.
We'd LIkE SoME eLeCtRIc BLaNketS.
SiNcERELy,
tHE CoWS

When he refuses to comply with their demands, the cows take action. Farmer Brown finds another note on the barn door: "Sorry. We're closed. No milk today." Soon the striking cows and Farmer Brown are forced to reach a mutually agreeable compromise, with the help of an impartial party--the duck. But this poor, beleaguered farmer's "atypical" troubles are not over yet!"

Lots of silly fun and highly recommended!

The Milk Makers, by Gail Gibbons
Many classes invite a dairy farmer to bring a cow to school as a follow up to this well-loved book.
A Reading Rainbow Selection.

A Cow, A Bee, A Cookie, and Me
This is a wonderful story for your farm unit!  Grandma and Ben are baking cookies, and she explains where all the ingredients really come from ... from cows to bees to tree bark.  Out of print, try eBay or Amazon.com auctions.

WOLF!
One of my brand-new favorites, and it's barely out of the Amazon box!  When the wolf comes to attack the farm animals they ignore him, because they're all too busy reading.  Of course, he learns to read, too, and they all live happily ever.

What A Wonderful Day To Be  A Cow

Beautiful paintings illustrate this story about farm animals and the months of the year.

Hooray For Dairy Farming!
Bakersfield -- my town -- is home to lots of large dairy farms, so this is a very popular book with photos that look like home.  Good solid info in child-friendly form.

COW
If you like cows, ice cream, great pictures, or just a good laugh, you'll love COW. Ever wondered why an ice-cream sundae isn't called an ice-cream Thursday? Having trouble telling a Jersey from a Holstein?

Let's Find Out About
Ice Cream
Wonderful photos of children and the cow to ice cream process.

Gardening Books for Kids

Making your own butter is a fun activity.
Collect small babyfood jars, fill them halfway with heavy cream (also called whipping cream), then shake and roll them till the butter thickens.

Here's a fun chant for while you work, that can also be sung to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star:

Making Butter Boogie

Shake it up
Shake it down
Shake it, shake it all around.

Shake it high
Shake it low
Shake it, shake it to and fro.

Shake it over
Shake it under
Pretty soon, you'll have butter!

I bring in my bread machine and bake bread
the same day we make butter.  Measuring ingredients
is a good math lesson and a great hands-on activity for the kids. Borrow extra bread machines if you can.

Tractor Books
All of my students -- and especially the boys -- have enjoyed the many books we've read about tractors.  Kids are always fascinated by big machines, and the books below include non-fiction with lots of great pictures of tractors, plus some wonderful stories with themes that go much deeper than life on the farm.

Be sure to check out some of the Making Words Activities listed below to use with your Tractors mini theme.

For a great Literacy Center, put your tractor books into a tub with a few toy tractors and farm toys, plus writing paper, pencils, and markers.  Invite children to draw tractors and farm pictures -- or for extra fun, overhead maps of their farm -- and write about them or label them.  A word bank posted on the side of a filing cabinet or cupboard door is helpful for beginning readers and writers and will encourage them to write more.

The Rusty, Trusty Tractor
By Joy Cowley

Micah and his Granpappy refuse a to buy a shiny new tractor from a salesman who makes fun of their old one.  The salesman is later rescued by the same tractor he ridiculed, and Micah learns that old things are sometimes as good -- or better -- than new ones.  This is a story that works on many levels and leads to terrific classroom discussions.

Reader/Reviewer  Patricia from Kooskia, Idaho, says:  "Joy Cowley's new book has at its core a strong message about ties that bind and relationships that last a lifetime."  Read her full review on the Amazon website ... this is a book you'll love!  Also available in paperback.

Tractor
By Craig Brown

A simply told story of a tractor's important role on a family farm.  Wonderful illustrations show what the farm animals are doing while the farmer and the tractor do their day-long job.

The Usborne Book of Tractors

A pictorial guide to tractors, sure to catch the imagination of boys and girls fascinated with machines.  Supporting text gives lots of great information.

Usborne Big Machines:
Tractors

A inexpensive and child-friendly board book, similar to the Usborne Book of Tractors, but in a smaller size.

Mighty Machines:
Tractor and Other Farm Machines

From the popular Mighty Machines Series, this book is filled with colorful pictures and information about farm machinery.  Great for building background knowledge about farming as a potential career.

Tractor Mac
A Golden Books Family Storytime Book

Despite the cartoonish illustrations, children enjoy this book much more than the professional book reviewers thought they would.  I found my copy at Target when it first came out, but haven't seen it in a bookstore in more than a year, so am glad that Amazon still offers it.

With the arrival of a shiny new tractor, Sibley the horse takes second place on the farm .... until (of course) he rescues Tractor Mac from the mud.  Kids love the happy, friendship-oriented ending:  "From that day on, Farmer Bill let both  Sibley and Mac work side by side. They became the best of friends.''

Jumbo Tractor Shaped Board Book

Take a trip to the farm! Come inside and meet the farmer and his big green tractor. This sturdy extra-large board book (more than 8" x 11") features simple text and DK's famous photography in extra-large format.

Tough Machines Board Book

From DK's First Board Book Series, this book is filled with colorful illustrations and easy to read text.

Things That Go Board Book

Another inexpensive and wonderful DK Board Book with pictures that kids love!  Terrific for developing vocabulary about machines, and for comparison and contrast discussions.

The Ultimate Tractor Sticker Book

Featuring more than 60 self-adhesive, full-color stickers plus informative, lively pages of text to complete and decorate, this book will have children engrossed for hours. Many different kinds of tractors and earth-moving machines to talk and write about.

Drive A Tractor

Books like this one -- complete with moveable steering wheel and panoramic views -- are usually thought of as "baby books," but my students LOVE having this one in our Down on the Farm Literacy Center!  Children get to "drive" five different tractors, complete with dashboards, controls, and a working horn.

With the emphasis on Academic Kindergarten -- and the subsequent loss of creative play time -- this is a fabulous book that gives kids the best of both worlds.

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
I've used these books in my classroom for so many years that I didn't give any thought to where I got the clip art on the covers of two of the books.  A couple of very thoughtful KinderKorner subscribers wrote to me about the fact that the cover art I was using is copyrighted, which means I need to change the artwork.    That will happen in the next couple days, and then I'll be sending out orders.  The new cover artwork won't change the books in any other way.

Mosaic of Thought:
Teaching Comprehension In A Reader's Workshop

By Ellin Keene & Susan Zimmermann

I've said it dozens -- if not hundreds -- of times in the past two years ... this book has changed the way I teach
as well as the way I think about teaching and planning lessons and units.

Mosaic of Thought reads like a good novel, and you're always waiting to see what happens next.  Keene and Zimmermann present well-rounded ideas and actual classroom scripts and scenarios that teach you to model the "think aloud" process that will help your students grow as readers, writers, and thinkers.

Their explanations of current research are easy to understand and show how to build background knowledge in your students and create the bridges and learning environment necessary for all students to succeed.  Mosaic of Thought  is always on my Top 10 Must-Have Books for Teachers list.  Highly recommended.

TLC Art Project

March 15th ~ Added final pages for our Mrs. Wishy-Washy Big Book

This adorable Mrs. Wishy-Washy is made from the lesson called "Woman" in the "More People" book from TLC.  For more information about TLC Art Books, visit www.tlcart.com

Our Mrs. Wishy-Washy
Big Book

Finished At Last!

Our Big Book is made on painting paper pages that measure 19 x 24 inches.  The cover background was sponge painted using purple, turquoise, and green tempera paints.

Page from original book

On several pages, I had to cut off Mrs. Wishy-Washy's arms and reposition them to make the illustrations look more like the ones in the Cowley book.   It's been fun to see the kids' reactions to this "rearranging" of their creations :o)

I photocopied the printed words directly from the Mrs. Wishy-Washy Big Book -- available only from The Wright Group -- then pasted it to each page.  Our book contains all the text from the original book, but has fewer pages, as I've combined two pages worth of text on some of the pages.
Mrs. Wishy-Washy is one of the first books I read at the beginning of the school year, and she's a classroom favorite all year long.

We do many things to act out the story, using animal masks, a hula hoop on the floor for the washtub, and a bucket, apron, and kerchief for Mrs. Wishy-Washy.

Available from Amazon.com
as a child-friendly board book
for under $5

The Wright Group has published several Mrs. Wishy-Washy stories by Joy Cowley, including Wishy-Washy Day and Splishy-Sploshy, which features The Meanies from another Joy Cowley book of the same name.

The books -- except for the board book on the left -- are available only through The Wright Group

For more information and photos of our Mrs. Wishy-Washy big book project -- and our Down on the Farm wall -- please visit last week's photos by clicking here.

March Quilts

This is the Kite Patch that Mrs. Landucci and I designed for March
There are a LOT of different quilt patches to choose from this month, including my new Kite Patch, the Pinwheel, the colorful Thumbprint Rainbow Patch I designed last week, a Sponge Painted Shamrock, and the fun Cat In The Hat Patch in honor of Dr. Seuss' Birthday

I've used this Pinwheel Patch in many Spring Quilts in the past few years

I tried the two patches together -- with a yellow border -- and thought it looked WAY too busy

Other Combinations & Patches We Tried

Mrs. Landucci and I spent an entire afternoon's prep time trying out other patches that might work well with the Kite Patch, but everything we tried looked too busy and detracted from the bright-and-simple Kite Patch.

After a lot of messing around, we came up with this colorful Thumbprint Rainbow Patch

A Few of My Favorite
Quilting Books

Two questions I'm often asked are:  "What are your favorite quilting stories and books?" and "Why don't you put together a packet of your classroom quilting ideas, so they'll all be in one place?"

This week I'm sharing several of my favorite quilting stories and books, including one I've only had for a couple weeks but am really enjoying.  And I'm planning to add a new literature-based thematic unit on quilting to the website in the near future.

I'm also in the process of writing a book/resource guide on Quilting in the Classroom, which should be available early this summer ... as soon as it's ready, I'll post the info to the website and to the KinderKorner and InMyRoom Listservs.

The Quiltmakers Gift

This book is a visual feast wrapped up in a wonderful story about giving and sharing.  A greedy King who collects beautiful things demands a quilt from an old quiltmaker who lives high up in the mountains, but she refuses because she only gives her quilts to the poor.   The only way he can get one of her quilts is to meet the quiltmaker's terms -- he must give away all his beautiful things.

The Amazon.com reviews are what sold me on this story, and it's already a hit with the KinderKids.  The Quiltmaker's Gift was the recipient of a 2000 Parents' Choice® Silver Honor award.  Highly recommended, as is the companion book below.
Currently offered by Amazon at 40% off publisher's price.

March Homework Calendar

Our March Homework Calendar art project is a beautiful Japanese-style print made in a two step art process that includes using colored tissue paper to transfer color, then rolling paint-coated marbles across the surface.

I saw this idea at the CKA conference two or three years ago, and it's been a favorite Spring art project ever since, as each child's artwork comes out distinctively different.  My class has also used this process to make quilt patches of various types at Easter time, and the quilts are always among the simplest and prettiest ones we make.

Victoria's Calendar Blackline Master sets include:
  • 13 months of homework (August through August for the current school year)

  • 365 simple standards-based activities, with no religious holiday references

  • Directions for suggested artwork for each month

  • Separate sets are available for both Kindergarten and First Grade,
